The Signs of the Zodiac

A horoscope, or birthchart, is a map of the positions of the planets at the exact time and place of birth. The horoscope is a circle that represents the path that the Sun appears to take (from our view point on Earth) every year. This path (called the ecliptic) is divided into twelve equal segments of 30?, corresponding roughly to the constellations placed in that part of the sky.

This zodiac is determined by using the Vernal Equinox, the point where the days and nights are of equal length, and where the Sun appears to move from Pisces into Aries. From this point, known as the 0? of Aries, the rest of the signs follow in a fixed and unchanging pattern: Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius and finally Pisces. Each sign of the zodiac represents different positive and negative aspects of behaviour and progress through life. Everyone has each of the signs represented in his or her birthchart, and each of the signs has a part to play in the character, personality and life of that individual.

The signs have a different and individual effect on planets that are placed in them. The most well known is the effect of the Sun in a particular sign. However, the chances are, that in your Birth chart other important factors such as the Ascendant, the Moon and most of the other planets will be in different signs to the Sun. Each different placing adds characteristics of the signs and planets into your chart.
